Sonya Galaviz

Sonya Galaviz comes from a distinguished Mexican heritage. Her Grandfather immigrated to the United States after spending his youth playing tenor sax in the renowned Perez Prado big band. Born in Salt Lake City, she has a unique perspective combining elements from the American West, her Mexican heritage and her love for the big city.
Galaviz, 24, is a self taught designer and has been developing her skills and aesthetic since childhood. At the age of 5 her mother taught her to sew and sketch, helping her develop the patience and skills that would later pave the path to her dreams as an artist. By the age of 8, Galaviz was single-handedly designing and sewing together costumes for her roles in school plays. At 15, she was successfully selling couture purses and RTW Teen wear.
In her late teens, she stumbled upon modeling professionally, extending her knowledge and experience in the industry. During her transition from modeling she worked at notable Chicago art galleries as a curator, as well as dealing in both local and international artwork on her own. Besides her innate talent in the arts, she has an eye for greatness in others.
Her modeling career helped focus her passion for the arts towards fashion design and at the age of 22, Galaviz moved to Chicago, having fallen in love with the city and its thriving fashion industry. Shortly after making the big move, the self taught designer – without any formal education – launched her first line of couture dresses. The night of her show, she unexpectedly sold the entire line. This experience encouraged her to continue her work and soon after she created a collection of avant-garde pieces. She displayed these in an installation format as part of the Chicago Art Walk in Pilsen. With a unique twist on the industry, it was a one-of-a-kind and well attended event.
Galaviz’s inspiration has always been designing pieces using luxury fabrics with a very distinct young, fun and sexy look. Her designs are meant to encourage an individual to feel powerful, sensual and most importantly, beautiful inside and out.
Today the busy designer is thriving more than ever. She continues to diversify and now has RTW, Couture, Swimwear, hand-painted Muertos T-shirts and hand-made silk kimono robes.
